Bulk - Ballast - 65mm

65mm ballast is a large, angular crushed rock with almost no fines. The open voids between the stones let enormous volumes of water through, and the sharp faces interlock enough to carry heavy loads over soft ground.

What it's used for

• Rock pits and detention systems — high void ratio means high storage capacity
• Stabilising boggy ground — a bridging layer over soft subgrade before base course goes on
• Site entries and haul tracks — a shake-down pad that knocks mud off tyres
• Erosion control — batters, drain outlets and scour protection

How much to order

Around 1.4–1.5 tonne per cubic metre loose. For a bridging layer over soft ground, allow 150–200mm depth — roughly 2.2 tonne per 10m².

Yard tip: Lay geotextile fabric under ballast on soft ground. Without it, the rock slowly punches down into the mud and you lose the layer within a season.
