What it's used for

• Brick and block coursing lines
• Setting out slabs, footings and fence lines
• Levelling and grading to a datum
• Aligning paving, edging and retaining walls

On the job: Pull the line properly tight and check it doesn't touch anything between the pegs. A line resting on a brick halfway along is worse than no line at all — it looks right and it isn't.
