A cement mixer turns a day of shovelling and a sore back into a straightforward job. If you're mixing more than about six bags of concrete or mortar by hand, hiring a mixer will pay for itself in time alone — and the mix will be more consistent.

Sizing the job

A typical electric mixer handles about one 20kg bag of premix plus cement per batch. Allow roughly three minutes per batch of mixing time.

Yard tip: Hose the drum out before the concrete goes off, not after. Cured concrete inside a drum is a chisel job and it will cost you a cleaning charge.
