A lawn roller is what you run over freshly laid turf to press the roots into contact with the soil beneath. Without it, air pockets under the roll dry the roots out and you get patchy establishment.

Sizing the job

Fill the drum with water for turf rolling. Roll in two directions, at right angles, straight after laying and watering.

Yard tip: Roll the turf, then water it heavily — not the other way around. Rolling wet turf can shear the roll and leave visible seams.
