A 60kg plate compactor is the right size for residential base work — paving bed, path base and small driveway sections. It's manageable for one person and easy to load into a ute or trailer.

Sizing the job

A 60kg plate compacts about 100mm of rubble per pass on damp material. Plan on two to three passes per layer, in alternating directions.

Yard tip: Wet the rubble before compacting. Water is what lets the fines migrate into the voids — dry material just bounces around under the plate.
