Bar chairs hold reinforcing mesh at the correct height within a concrete slab. Steel sitting on the ground does nothing structurally — the whole point of reinforcement is that it sits in the tension zone, and a bar chair is what puts it there and keeps it there while the concrete goes in around it.
Allow roughly 4 chairs per square metre of mesh — around 800mm centres — and more where the mesh is being walked on during the pour.
Trade tip: Check the chairs are still standing right before the truck arrives. Mesh that has been walked flat on the day of the pour is the single most common reason a slab cracks in its first summer.
In stock at 165 Railway Terrace, Keswick SA 5035 — grab it when you collect your materials rather than making a separate trip to a hardware store. Open Monday to Friday 6:30am–4:00pm and Saturday 7:00am–2:00pm. Call (08) 8443 9533 to check stock.
