Working it out

Each sleeper adds 200mm of wall height. A 2.0m wall run needs posts at 2.0m centres (measured to post centres), and sleepers are stacked dry between them. Allow for drainage aggregate and an ag line behind the wall — that's what stops hydrostatic pressure building up behind it.

Before you build: In South Australia, retaining walls over 1m generally need council approval and engineering, and walls near a boundary or carrying surcharge (a driveway, a pool, a structure) may need it lower than that. Check before you dig.
